Natural Distribution and Characteristics of Populations of Camellia japonica in Korea

Abstract
This study was carried out to survey the natural distribution, characteristics of populations and similarities among populations of Camellia japonica in Korea.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. Camellia japonica is distributed in 94 districts of 7 provinces and is growing in group. Northern distribution is limited to Daecheong-do (37.80N)in west sea, to Uleung-do (37. 30N) in east sea and to Beein (36.10N) in land.
2. Camellia japonica populations studied could be divided into 3 groups according to the characteristics of its leaf, capsule and seed.
3. The number of plant species which were growing in Camellia habitats were 21 species in average and 66 species in total from 7 populations. The number of Camellia trees per 500 §³ were 20 in average.
4. Importance value is 0.8892 in average. The dominance of Camellia in these populations seems to be stable.
5. Seven populations were divided into two groups according to the characteristics of habitat. One group were populations in islands which had been naturally maintained, while the human interference simplified the populations of the other group in seaside and in land.
